Abbreviations for Sources and Specifications of Standard Editions for Sources

By Michael Lapidge

Revised and Updated for the Sources of Old English and Anglo-Latin Literary Cultures by Brandon W. Hawk, Benjamin Weber, and Charles D. Wright

Rev. 2021–23 (The form here is a provisional bibliography and remains a work in progress)

Preface to the First Edition

The present list was compiled in the first instance for use by contributors to Fontes Anglo-Saxonici; it was subsequently adopted by the editors of Sources of Anglo-Saxon Literary Culture (SASLC). The abbreviations have also been adopted (in slightly modified form) by the Toronto Dictionary of Old English. The list is issued in this form merely as a guide for scholars contributing to these several projects and is not intended in any sense as a comprehensive bibliography of books known in early England. Omissions and errors will be readily apparent to anyone who handles it.

During the course of compilation I have drawn freely on the advice and guidance of Peter Clemoes, Helmut Gneuss, Joyce Hill and Don Scragg. Michael Reeve and Neil Wright helped me with editions of classical texts, Vivien Law with the grammarians, and George Brown with Bede. In the later stages I was able to profit from the criticisms of Pauline Thompson (on behalf of the DOE) and from the meticulous corrections of Fred Biggs (on behalf of SASLC). Remaining errors, however, are entirely my own.

It is hoped to issue revised and updated versions of this list whenever necessary. I should therefore be grateful to learn of errors, omissions, inconsistencies and addenda to the present list.

Preface to the Revised and Updated Edition

Much has changed since Michael Lapidge first produced the first edition of this pamphlet for the two sources projects in 1988. The Fontes Anglo-Saxonici project was shifted to an online platform in 1998, and funding for it was completed in 2002; in 2019–2021 the legacy data for the project were migrated to a new sever at the University of St. Andrews. The Sources of Old English and Anglo-Latin Literary Culture (SOEALLC, previously SASLC) has undergone similar large shifts, including a new name and the launch of a new online platform in 2020. Over the last 30+ years, the nature of research on literature and sources in early England has also drastically changed with the burgeoning of the internet and digital resources. The launch of a new phase of publication for SOEALLC seems like a prime time to update resources like this pamphlet.

Foremost, we want to thank Michael Lapidge. The original pamphlet has been invaluable for researchers on the Fontes and SOEALLC projects and even more widely over the past few decades. We are especially grateful for Michael’s permission to update this resource and for his work to update much of the information in sections 2-5, especially regarding newer editions.

It is the intention of the Sources of Old English and Anglo-Latin Literary Culture project (SOEALLC) to record the literary sources known to early English authors. In order for the citation of sources in the project be consistent and generally intelligible to users, it is desirable that contributors to the project use standard abbreviations in referring to the Latin and Old English sources that they identify. This list, which provides abbreviations for the sources most likely to be cited frequently, is arranged as follows:

            1. Biblia Sacra

            2. Named Classical Authors

            3. Named Patristic Authors

            4. Named Merovingian and Carolingian Authors

            5. Named Insular Authors

            6. Anonymous and Pseudonymous Writings

            7. Old English Literature

It is essential that contributors to SOEALLC cite sources from editions that are standard among those scholars working in the fields of classical, patristic, and medieval studies. Editions that are to be used by all contributors are specified within square brackets after each entry in the following list.

It is impossible that the list should include every work that every contributor will wish to cite. Rather than being comprehensive, the list is meant to be representative. In the case of a work that does not appear in the list, the contributor is asked to select an appropriate edition and to devise an abbreviation on the principles that have been applied in the list and that should be readily coherent. Contributors to SOEALLC should include new abbreviations—with all relevant bibliographical information—within the body of each entry. The abbreviations in the present list will be most frequently used in the headnote of an entry.

In the editions specified below, several standard abbreviations for specific series are used: e.g. CCSL for Corpus Christianorum, Series Latina; PL for Patrologia Latina; and so on. Readers should consult the SOEALLC Reference Works and Abbreviations for further information about these.

BIBLIA SACRA

The standard edition for all references to the Bible as known in the Middle Ages (the Latin Vulgate) is Biblia sacra iuxta vulgatam versionem, ed. R. Weber, 5th ed. (Stuttgart, 2007), with the exception of the Roman Psalter, for which see below.

Contributors might also want to consult the following resources for other biblical versions:

ANONYMOUS AND PSEUDONYMOUS WRITINGS

The immense variety and number of anonymous and pseudonymous writings that were in circulation during the early Middle Ages make it impossible to devise a comprehensive set of abbreviations, or even to enunciate comprehensive guidelines for contributors who might need to devise new abbreviations. Although the procedure of lumping together anonymous writings, or of lumping together disparate works under the pseudonymous attribution to a single known author, might seem questionable from a scholarly point of view (sidestepping various historical methodological issues), it will help in keeping computer data consistent.

In listing anonymous writings, there is one procedure that must be followed in each case: namely, that the abbreviation for each anonymous work must be preceded by the designation ANON. (whether the work in question is by one datable and localizable but unidentifiable anonymous author, or whether it is a work that evolved during the course of years and varies from manuscript to manuscript).

Similarly, every pseudonymous writing should be given first with the designation ANON. and an abbreviation of the title, followed by / and an abbreviation of the pseudonym. In cases where the pseudonymous work is known by an anonymous title as well as a title associated with a named figure, both should be given (as with the Remedia peccatorum, printed as Augustine’s Sermo CCCX in the PL).

The standard guide to writings falsely attributed to patristic authors is J. Machielsen, Clavis Patristica Pseudepigraphorum Medii Aevi, 3 vols. in 5 to date (Turnhout, ). IA-B: Opera Homiletica; IIA-B, Ascetica/Monastica; IIIA, Artes Liberales. The projected vol. IIIB will cover liturgical pseudepigrapha. For other pseudonymous writings one must consult the relevant repertories of medieval Latin writings (see the SOEALLC list of Reference Works) and such reference works as the Dictionnaire de Spiritualité (DS).

Abbreviations for anonymous and pseudonymous works should be modeled on the following examples (which are necessarily representative and not comprehensive):

Aetna = ANON.Aetna [ed. F.R.D. Goodyear (Cambridge, 1965)]

Pseudo-Augustine, Remedia peccatorum = ANON.Rem.pecc/PS.AVG.Serm.cccx [PL 39, 2340-42]

Pseudo-Bede, Collectanea = ANON.Coll./PS.BEDA [ed. M. Bayless and M. Lapidge, Collectanea Pseudo-Bedae, Scriptores Latini Hiberniae 14 (Dublin, 1998)]

Legimus in ecclesiasticis historiis = ANON.Leg.eccl.hist./PS.BEDA.Lib.Hom.71 [ed. J.E. Cross, Traditio 33 (1977): 105-21]

De quindecim signis ante diem iudicii = ANON.Quind.sign./PS.BEDA [ed. M. Bayless and M. Lapidge, Collectanea Pseudo-Bedae, Scriptores Latini Hiberniae 14 (Dublin, 1998), 178-79]

De signis caeli = ANON.Sign.cael./PS.BEDA [ed. A. Dell’Era, Studi Medievali Ser. 3, 20 (1979): 269-301]

De duodecim abusiuis saeculi = ANON.Duodec.abus.saec. [ed. S. Hellman, TU 34 (Lepizig, 1909), 32-60)]

Hisperica famina, A-text = ANON.Hisp.fam.A [ed. M. Herren (Toronto, 1974).

Hisperica famina, B, C, D, and E-texts = ANON.Hisp.fam.B, ANON.Hisp.fam.C, ANON.Hisp.fam.D, ANON.Hisp.fam.E [ed. F.J.H. Jenkinson (Cambridge, 1908)]

Historia Apollonii = ANON.Hist.Apollon. [ed. G.A.A. Kortekaas (Groningen, 1984)]

Pseudo-Isidore, Liber de ordine creaturarum = ANON.Lib.ord.creat./PS.ISID. [ed. M.C. Diaz y Diaz (Santiago de Compostela, 1972)]

Liber de ortu et obitu patrum = ANON.Lib.ort.ob.patr./PS.ISID. (ed. J. Carracedo Fraga, CCSL 108E (Turnhout, 1996), 51.1-3]

Liber monstrorum = ANON.Lib.monstr. [ed. F. Porsia (Bari, 1976)]

Mirabilia orientis = ANON.Mir.orient. [ed. C. Lecouteux (Meisenheim, 1979)]

Visio Baronti = ANON.Vis.Baronti [ed. W. Levison, MGH, SRM 5 (1910), 377-94]

Such abbreviations as these are relatively straightforward. In the case of certain classes of writings, however, further specification in each abbreviation will be necessary. This is particularly the case with biblical commentaries where, for example, there are dozens of anonymous commentaries on Matthew. At times, a spurious attribution to a specific known figure helps to disambiguate these sorts of works (like in the case of works designated with attributions like Pseudo-Augustine or Pseudo-Bede). A particular anonymous commentary that does not have a standard title may in such cases be specified by recourse to the present location of the manuscript in which it is preserved, if it is unique, or by the name of its editor. Thus, for example, the anonymous (Hiberno-Latin) commentary and glosses preserved in Würzburg, Universitätsbibliothek, M.p.th.f 61 is abbreviated as: ANON.Comm.Gloss.Matth.(Würzb.61.).

A number of specific types of anonymous and pseudonymous texts should also be considered separately, as in the following.

Hagiography

One particularly large class of anonymous writings where contributors will inevitably have to devise their own abbreviations is hagiography. Abbreviations for saints’ vitae, miracula, and passiones should be modeled on the following examples:

Vita S. Cuthberti = ANON.Vit.Cuthb. [ed. B. Colgrave, Two Lives of St Cuthbert (Cambridge, 1940), 60-138]

Vita S. Gregorii = ANON.Vit.Greg. [ed. B. Colgrave, The Earliest Life of Gregory the Great (Lawrence, KS, 1968)]

Further information and abbreviations for hagiographical works may be found in entries by E. G. Whatley, in Sources of Anglo-Saxon Literary Culture, Volume 1: Abbo of Fleury, Abbo of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, and Acta Sanctorum, ed. F. M. Biggs, T. D. Hill, P. E. Szarmach, and E. G. Whatley, with the assistance of D. A. Oosterhouse, Sources of Anglo-Saxon Literary Culture 1 (Kalamazoo, 2001). For editions, references should be to those specified in the Bollandists’ Biblioteca Hagiographica Latina (BHL), E. Dekkers, Clavis Patrum Latinorum (CPL), and R. Gryson, Répertoire général des auteurs ecclésiastiques latins (RG), I, 49-92 (A-SS); but Whatley’s entries should also be consulted for detailed information about editions (especially more recent publications) and information about the knowledge of such works in early England.

Liturgical Texts

It was the very nature of liturgical manuscripts to undergo adaptation and modification according to the requirements and practice of the local church for which the manuscript was written. The result is that, even though liturgical manuscripts may be broadly classified according to function, no two are exactly the same. Even the members of such broadly defined classes as “Gregorian Sacramentary” or “Eighth-century Gelasian Sacramentary” share no more than a family resemblance. Accordingly, in cases where a liturgical book is cited as the source of another text, it will be essential to specify fully the manuscript and edition from which the citation is taken. Only in cases where a manuscript edition is cited frequently will it be appropriate to devise an ad hoc abbreviation. See now, especially, The Liturgical Books of Anglo-Saxon England, ed. Richard W. Pfaff, OEN Subsidia 23 (Kalamazoo, 1995) and K.D. Hartzell, Catalogue of Manuscripts Written or Owned in England up to 120 Containing Music (Woodbridge, 2006). For bibliography on liturgical texts and manuscripts one may consult Richard W. Pfaff, Medieval Liturgy, Toronto Medieval Bibliographies (Toronto, 1982); Cyrille Vogel, Medieval Liturgy: An Introduction to the Sources, trans. and rev. William Storey and Niels Rasmussen (Washington, D.C., 1981); Eric Palazzo, A History of Liturgical Books from the Beginning to the Thirteenth Century, trans. M. Beuamont (Collegeville, MN, 1998); and the relevant fascicles in the series Typologie des sources du moyen âge occidental. Further resources are listed in Charles D. Wright’s online Medieval Liturgy bibliography.

Canon Law

Latin versions of the canons of the early church councils should be cited from the edition of C.H. Turner, Ecclesiae Occidentalis Monumenta Iuris Antiquissima, 2 vols. in 7 (Oxford, 1899-1939), and abbreviated in accordance with the following models:

Canones apostolorum = ANON.Can.apost.

Council of Nicaea = ANON.Conc.Nic.

Council of Antioch = ANON.Conc.Antioch.

Council of Sardica = ANON.Conc.Sardic.

Canons of councils held in Africa should be cited according to the edition of C. Munier, CCSL 149 (Turnhout, 1974); those of Gaul according to that of C. Munier and C. de Clercq, 2 vols., CCSL 148-148A (Turnhout, 1963); in each case, the place and year of the council should be specified: e.g. ANON.Conc.Gall.(Aurel.) 511.

Collections of church councils should be cited and abbreviated as follows:

Collectio Quesnelliana = ANON.Coll.can.Quesnel. [PL 56, 359-746]

Dionysius Exiguus, Collectio canonum secunda = DION.EXIG.Coll.can.secund. [PL 67, 139-230]

Collectio canonum Hibernensis = ANON.Coll.can.Hib. [ed. Roy Flechner, 2 vols. (Washington, D.C., 2019]

Further editions of canon collections are given in CPL, nos. 1764-99 as well as RG, I, 364-69 (CAN) and (for a breakdown of the collections of Dionysius Exiguus) 446-52 (DION-E). For a more comprehensive repertory see Linda Fowler-Magerl, Clavis canonum: Selected Canon Law Collections before 1140. Papal Correspondence and Decretals

Texts and editions are specified in CPL, nos. 1568-1744; the corresponding entries in RG can be located using the concordance with CPL nos. (II, 874-82). See also G. Fransen, Les décretales et les collections de décretales, Typologie des sources du moyen âge occidental 2 (Turnhout, 1972, with a Mise à jour, 1985). Note in particular the following:

Liber pontificalis = ANON.Lib.pontif. [ed. T. Mommsen, MGH, Gesta Pontificum I.i (1898)]

Liber diurnus = ANON.Lib.diurn. [ed. H Förster (Bern, 1958)]

Dionysius Exiguus, Collectio decretorum Pontificorum Romanorum = DION.EXIG.Coll.decret. [PL 67, 231-316; see the essential analysis by M. Brett, “Theodore and the Latin Canon Law,” in Archbishop Theodore, ed. M. Lapidge, CSASE 11 (Cambridge, 1995), p. 138-40]

Penitentials

Some texts and editions are specified in CPL, nos. 1877-96, and in RG II, 682-83 (PAE), as well as under the relevant named authors. See in general Rob Meens, Penance in Medieval Europ 600-1200 (Cambridge, 2014), and Cyrill Vogel, Les Libri paenitentiales, Typologie des sources du moyen âge occidental 27 (Turnhout, 1978, with a Mise à jour by Allen Frantzen, 1985). Note in particular the following:

Penitential of Cummean = ANON.Poen.Cummean [ed. L. Bieler, The Irish Penitentials (Dublin, 1963), 108-34]

Penitential of Pseudo-Egbert = ANON.Poen./PS.EGBERT [ed. H.J. Schmitz, Die Bussbücher und das kanonische Bussverfahren (Düsseldorf, 1898), 661-74]

Paenitentiale Cantabrigiense = ANON.Poen.Cant. [ed. K.M. Delen, A.H. Gaastra, M.D. Saan, and B. Schaap, Sacris Erudiri 41 (2002) 355-69; formerly known as the Penitential of Saint-Germain]

Secular Law-Codes

It is not yet clear how many of the law-codes from the Continent were known in early England, but the following should be noted:

Glossaries

As in the case of liturgical texts, it is evident that no two medieval glossaries are exactly the same, and that each successive copying of a glossary involved (to some extent at least) the process of redaction. It is essential, therefore, to specify fully the manuscript and edition of any medieval glossary that is cited; only if such a glossary is cited frequently will it be appropriate to devise an ad hoc abbreviation.

ANONYMOUS OLD ENGLISH LITERATURE

Various writings in Old English were used as sources by later writers. These include both Old English works attributed to named figures (like Cynewulf) and anonymous works. (For the works of Ælfric and Wulfstan of York, see the section on “Named Insular Authors,” above.) References to Old English literature should be indicated by short title and accompanied by Cameron number (AC). For editions, it is usually most appropriate to follow the DOE, but editions cited by DOE may have been superseded in newer publications; in these cases, it is appropriate to indicate more recent editions in the body of an entry, especially if it is discussed with details about evidence of the work’s use by a later author.

Some examples of short titles and Cameron numbers are as follow:

I Æthelstan = LawIAs (B14.8)

Augustine’s Soliloquies (Old English) = Solil (B9.4)

Beowulf = Beo (4.1)

Blickling Homily 7 = HomS 26 (B3.2.26)
